How to Choose from Five Common Soldering Iron Tip Types

Common soldering iron tips can be divided into five types: B, C, D, K, and I.

  • B-Type Conical Tip: Suitable for general through-hole components and basic SMD soldering.
  • C-Type Bevel Tip: Provides a larger contact area, making it suitable for larger solder joints.
  • D-Type Chisel Tip: Ideal for individual IC pins and small solder joints.
  • K-Type Knife Tip: Can be used with flux for drag soldering rows of IC pins.
  • I-Type Fine Tip: Suitable for ultra-small components, densely spaced solder joints, and fine wires.

When choosing a tip, consider not only its shape but also whether its dimensions and bore size are compatible with your soldering iron. If the tip becomes severely blackened, oxidized, or no longer wets properly with solder, replacement is recommended.

Do You Need a Temperature-Controlled Soldering Iron?

For general wire or terminal soldering, a basic soldering iron is usually sufficient. When working with heat-sensitive electronic components such as circuit boards and ICs, however, a temperature-controlled soldering iron is recommended.
